Armenia`s economic activity continues to decline

In Armenia, economic activity in January- September 2020 continued to decline, amounting to a negative 6.6% (instead of a 6.4% decline in January-  August this year and a 7.1% growth over the same period of 2019). ...  According to the final data of the RA Statistical Committee, in  September 2020. by September 2019 economic activity decreased by  7.5%, but only in September 2020. accelerated growth to 10.6% from  7.4% in August.

In January-September of this year, the only spheres that kept on  growing were the industrial sector, the energy complex and  agriculture - respectively 1% and 1.5% and 0.5% per annum. And the  rest of the industries showed a serious decline: construction - by  15.7%, trade - 11.4%, services - by 11.7%.  A year earlier, in  January-September 2019, the growth of economic activity was largely  determined by the service sector - by 15.5% per annum, the industrial  sector - by 9.7%, the trade sector - by 8.8%, the construction sector  - by 4.4%, and the energy complex and agriculture were in decline -  by 2.2% and 4.8%, respectively.

The industrial product price index increased in January-September  2020 compared to the same period in 2019 by 0.9%, in September 2020  compared to September 2019 - by 1.4%, and in September 2020 alone -  it decreased by 0.2%. A year earlier, in January-September 2019  compared to the same period in 2018, the industrial product price  index increased by 1.6%, in September 2019 compared to September 2018  - by 0.5%, and only in September 2019 - by 0.2%.

On a monthly basis (in September), the decisive impetus to the growth  of economic activity was given by the construction sector, which  increased its volumes by 9.4% (against growth by 4.9% in September  2019 and 29.8% growth in August 2020), in a smaller the retail sector  - by 5.2% from 0.4% in August (against 0.6% growth in September  2019), the service sector - by 4.1% (against 3.6% growth in September  2019 and 4.3% growth in August 2020) and the industrial sector - 3.1%  (against 0.6% growth in September 2019 and 3.4% growth in August  2020).

Energy complex in September 2020 replaced 1.6% growth in August 2020.  by 3.7% decline (against 8.8% decline in September 2019).

On an annualized basis (September 2020 to September 2019), all  spheres showed a decline, with the exception of industry and  construction - respectively, an increase of 1.8% and 0.6%, while the  service sector showed a decline of - 18.3%, the trade sector - by  10.8%, the power complex - by 1.7%. A year earlier, in September 2019  by September 2018, these areas were in growth, and the pace of growth  was led by the services sector - by 15.1%, industry - 11%, the energy  complex - 9.3%, followed by the trade sector - 7.5 % and the  construction sector - 4.2%.

According to statistics in January-September 2020, the absolute  leadership is held by the trade sector with a volume of 2 trillion.  drams ($ 4.2 billion). The industrial sector moved up to the second  place in terms of volume - 1.4 trillion ($ 2.9 billion), shifting to  the third service sector - 1.2 trillion drams ($ 2.6 billion), the  fourth position is occupied by the agricultural sector - 555.2  billion drams ($ 1.1 billion), and the construction sector with a  volume of 224.3 billion drams ($ 463.3 million). The volume of  electricity generation was in January-September 2020. 5737 million  kWh.

At the same time, Armenia's foreign trade turnover in  January-September 2020 amounted to 2.4 trillion.  drams ($ 5 billion)  with an annual decline of 10.5%. In its structure, the volume of  exports underwent an annual decline of 4.4% to 884.9 billion drams ($  1.8 billion), and the decline in imports was more significant - by  13.7% to 1.5 trillion. drams ($ 3.2 billion). In September 2020  alone, foreign trade turnover increased by 4.9%, due to an increase  in exports by 8.7% and imports by 2.7%.

Compared to September 2019, the decrease in foreign trade turnover by  12.4% was provoked by a significant decline in imports - by 20.4%,  with an increase in exports by 4.6%. A year earlier, in January-  September 2019, the growth of Armenia's foreign trade turnover  amounted to 13.1%, which was due to an increase in imports by 20.5%  and a more modest growth in exports - by only 0.2%.  The average  settlement rate of AMD to USD was in September 2020 AMD 486.69 / $ 1,  and in January- September - AMD 484.20 / $ 1, against AMD 476.23 / $  1 in September 2019 and AMD 481.52 ./$1 in January-September 2019
